How to make gin in 48 hours

Do you like gin? Fancy a mix of flavours? So why not try to make your own home brewed gin?

One day I was surfing on the internet and I found an article about the different classifications of gin, that in summary are:

  • Genever: There are various ways of producing genever, but the basic process is the same: fermented grain mash is infused with juniper berries then distilled.
  • Compound Gin: Compound gin is not redistilled: flavorings are added to a neutral spirit. The flavorings may be natural or artificial. In some cases, the gin is made simply by infusing juniper berries.
  • Distilled Gin: Grain mash is distilled to produce a neutral spirit, then infused with juniper berries and botanicals and redistilled. Alcohol and flavorings may be added after distillation and the end product may be colored and sweetened.
  • London Gin: London gin is redistilled in a traditional still with juniper berries and botanicals. The flavorings may be added only during distillation and must be natural. The ethyl alcohol must be of high quality and the gin must contain at least 70% alcohol after distillation. No coloring may be added after distillation, though sugar may be added to the end product.

After reading this, I was curious about making my own gin and I decided to start with the simplest and less complex option – Compound Gin – because the distillation process takes a long time and is very complex for beginners, and for this type of gin the process only takes 48 hours. The tools and ingredients required are:


  • Glass jar (to mix all the ingredients)
  • Funnel (some already includes the sieve)
  • Sieve
  • Glass bottle
  • Spoon
  • Optional: Coffee filter to make a better filtering


  • Bottle of Vodka (+37.50%)
  • Juniper Berries
  • Coriander Seeds
  • Hibiscus Flower
  • Cinnamon (Sticks)
  • Citrines (Lemon, Lime e Orange) – I used the peel of lime, lemon, and orange. One slice of orange. Orange juice.

To make 330ml of homemade gin I used the following measures:

  • 300ml vodka
  • 14 grams Juniper
  • 5 grams Coriander
  • half stick Cinnamon
  • 2 grams Hibiscus
  • 2/3 cm lime peel (without the white side bit)
  • 2/3 cm lemon peel (without the white side bit)
  • 2/3 cm orange peel (without the white side bit)
  • slice of orange
  • juice of half orange

Better drink with tonic Fever-Tree Elderflower and one slice of orange or orange peel.
